| Paving
Schist paving stone is supplied to site in random sizes and
shapes ranging from 300 sq up to sometimes over 1m sq. Thickness of paving will
vary depending on the load that it will be required
to take. Standard paving stone for domestic use on footpaths, decking etc is approximately
30-40mm. For a vehicular access thicker stone up to 50mm thick is required. The
substrate material used for the heavier loads needs to be more substantial, this
often includes steel mesh to reinforce the bed.
Method of Laying
Prepare a bed of compacted base course up to 80 - 100mm of the
finished height of stone.
A mortar mix of Portland Cement and washed East Coast sand to one part cement
to
3 – 4 parts sand. Stone should be placed firmly down into the full mortar
bed. The face placed
into the mortar bed should be wiped over to moisten it. Use a rubber mallet to
tap down the entire top face of the paving stone into the wet mortar. Check to
see that the entire face has come in contact with the mortar by lifting stone,
if dry patches are visible more mortar needs to be added so the stone is completely
bonded. Bed the pavers down to the required finished level.
Grouting.
Oxide additives
are often used to achieve a contrasting colour to the stone paving. Great care
must be taken to add exactly measured amount of oxide to mortar mix. Stone should
be dampened with a fine mist spray. Apply grout into joints until filled flush
with the top of the stone. Once the grout has hardened off slightly brush the
excess grout material with a broom then clean off stone with a dampened sponge.
